My Trip to Chicago

My trip to Chicago, IL…. Where do I begin haha

As a photographer there are certain locations, places, and destinations that will spark your interest and fit your style.. Chicago, was one of them. I had always wanted to go to Chicago, I heard so many things about this city good, and bad. I wouldn’t let the bad stop me. To star off here are some cool & interesting facts about Chicago:

1. Chicago was one of the first and largest municipalities to require public art as part of the renovation or construction of municipal buildings, with the passage of the Percentage-for-Arts Ordinance in 1978.

2. The Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at 110 stories high. Its elevators are among the fastest in the world operating as fast as 1,600 feet per minute.

(continues below)

3. The first televised U.S. presidential candidates’ debate was broadcast from Chicago’s CBS Studios on September 26, 1960, between John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Richard Milhous Nixon.

4. The “Historic Route 66” begins in Chicago at Grant Park on Adams Street in front of the Art Institute of Chicago.

6. Four states are visible from the Skydeck Chicago (formerly the Sears Tower Skydeck). Indiana, Illinois, Michigan & Wisconsin.(seen in picture below)

When I landed in Chicago, I was with my Uncle, who is just like me in every aspect. We wanted to explore. The first thing we did on our taxi ride to our hotel, was scout locations. We wanted to see everything and anything, during our stay! So, we did! We walked roughly 27 miles that day, going all over Chicago, trying different forms of transportation, looking up, down, right, left, and every angle… We wanted to see everything.

I am from the Bay Area, and I love my city….. but Chicago took my heart. The people, the food, the history, everything fascinated me so much. I felt like a 5 year old boy in a candy/toy car store. Okay, now for the reason why I was in Chicago… It wasn’t just for fun, I had been hired to cover a very important event. Although, I knew I had a job to do, I was so focused on the perfection of Chicago.. I was truly amazed!

During my stay in this beautiful city, I stayed at a hotel that goes by the name of The Drake. Now if you haven’t heard of it, it is a very exquisite, upscale, fancy, 5-Star spot. Here is a little history about it!

-In 1920, on New Year’s Eve, 2000 Chicagoans attended The Drake’s opening night. It became the most talked about hotel in the country. The Gold Coast Room hosted lavish floor shows and big bands. The depression hit and then prohibition—but the bands played on. At prohibition’s end the Coq d’Or, Drake’s famous bar, stocked 200,000 gallons of whiskey for an all-night celebration.

-During WWII, The Drake was used to house the military. Refurbished at war’s end, she continued as Chicago’s grand dame. By 1980, however, she was none-too-gracefully showing her age.

-In 1981, The Drake was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She also found, in Hilton International, the rich admirer she needed to restore her to her former glory. Hilton, like many a suitor, underestimated the cost of keeping its new love in style. They had planned a lavish $4 million restoration and $41 million later, they are still at it.

After my stay, I have always wanted to go back. There are so many things I have not talked about in this post. I could ramble on for hours about how great this city is! I hope to visit Chicago soon, and take more pictures, and explore more of its history.

  1. I love your photos, Chicago is one of my favorite cities of all time and I’m constantly trying to find excuses to visit!

  2. You made me really homesick just now…. Beautiful pics. Every time I go back I do it with an eye towards seeing what restaurants I can review for my blog. Now I want to go back and see it thru the eyes of a tourist.

  3. I consider myself among the lucky millions to have grown up in Chicago. I’ve lived in heaps of other places since then, but I maintain that it’s the greatest city in the world. You’ve done a beautiful job capturing it–I love the last bridge shot.

  4. Nick, if you’ve really (I do mean the word “really” here) taken these pics, then you’ve got a permanent fan from now !! I mean, seriously brother!! These pics are so fantabulous !! In love with ’em !! I could hardly wait to click the ‘follow’ button 😛

Cheers to this post man !! Awesome !!

And please check out my latest post on love & relationship – http://raajtram.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/let-the-time-decide/

And even my new PhotoBlog – http://raajclicks.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/oh-i-love-my-laptop/

  5. I remember my first visit to Chicago a few years ago. I fell in love with the city and like you took many photographs because I found it inspiring. I’m just wondering how you got a shot of the empty bridge?

  6. The Drake is a great hotel. The former Playboy Club used to be acrossed the street from it. For photography, Chicago has enough to keep a person busy for a verrrrrry long time. Even once you get off the beaten path there is still so much to see and do. I recommend seeing it in May-July, everyone wakes up from the winter and the streets are bustling with activity.

  7. Awesome photo’s and interesting facts. Walking 27 miles is no small feat, I’ve only biked that far before, I couldn’t imagine walking for so long! Did you by chance sample their classic hot-dogs – they are the best from carts instead of actual restaurants, Also, their pizza is divine – copied many times, though it is never the same. My parent’s grew up in Chicago and they’ve talked (good and bad) about it since moving to Wisconsin in their mid 20’s. Another great place to travel if you are looking for good food, people, and photo opportunities – St. Luis. The arch is AMAZING!! Unfortunately, I only had cheap disposable cameras then, if only I’d had my Nikon for that trip!! Great post, and awesome pics!!

  8. Beautiful Photos. Glad you enjoyed Chicago. You have a great sense of architecture beauty. I’ve tried photographing Chicago many times, but my pictures are no where the quality of yours. Glad you enjoyed your trip here.

  9. Reblogged this on Mel Noir's Blog and commented:
Sorry I haven’t been posting on here that often. My brain has been elsewhere lately. While I find it, here are some wonderful pictures of Chicago, IL. Second coolest place in the world (after Newcastle).

  10. I also absolutely LOVE Chicago. I grew up in Wisconsin, but only recently fell in love with The Chi (about three years ago). I moved to FL (different Bay Area than you) with my boyfriend who had landed a job here. We both love Chicago though, and have plans to live there someday.

I wrote a post a long time ago, titled “Sweet Home Chicago” if you’re interested in checking it out.

Beautiful pictures, and congrats on the being Freshly Pressed!

  11. Where was the photo showing the stone corridor with the archways taken? It looks like a fascinating place. I got vertigo just looking at the Skydeck picture. Whoa!

Congrats on being Freshly Pressed. 🙂

  12. Beautiful photos! Love the way you experimented with angles and such. Chicago is breathtaking now, but part of me wishes I could see it at an earlier date, when the buildings were less tall and more decorated. I found a great book called “Lost Chicago” that speaks to this time period. You might want to check it out too.

  13. Chicago is a great and unique city. It would be hard to beat it’s diverse architecture and art. I certainly hope you got to see the Picasso, the Miro, the Calder, the Dubuffet and the Chagall that are conveniently in outdoor public spaces and within blocks of each other.

  14. Great blog, I use to live there, so much to photograph there. It takes a lot to get photographs at every location that you could there. Great post.

  15. I love this city. Lived and worked there for over 10 years, in a variety of neighborhoods and jobs. I miss the lake and the great culture available in Chicago.

I do not, however, miss the traffic and pollution from the trucks on the side streets.

Still, I love this city and visit once a year, if not more, when I can, to see a few friends still living there.

Enjoyed your photos immensely. Congrats on being FP!

  16. Nick — On behalf of us bloggers here in Chicagoland, WELL DONE! Having spent much of my working career DT, I’ve seen what you saw. But tonight I saw it through through new eyes. Not many people (photogs included) have pulled that one off. Thanks for putting a smile on my face tonight!

  17. My home city! I’ve been traveling for a while now and when I tell people I’m from Chicago, they always have a glimmer or recognition and adulation in their eyes. Most people I met have not visited Chicago but have always wanted to. I encourage all people to visit Chicago because it’s truly a world-class city. The architecture is stunning, the food is incredible, and in the summer, the lake front and the beaches are divine. Glad to see someone sharing the love after a recent trip to my home city!

  18. Love my city, and for the record Chicagoans will still call the Sears Tower the Sears Tower, whatchoo talkin’ about, Willis?

Nice take on our city, in particular love the second bridge photo.

  19. The photograph taken looking down from I’m guessing the Sears Tower is amazing. There is so much downward movement from the lines of the transparent structure and the architecture of the buildings. Thanks for sharing!

  20. Great photos! I was in Chicago for the fifth or so time just a few weeks ago…definitely one of my favorite cities in the States. If you have the time, check out my blog “I Could Write It…” There’s some recent reviews of the great restaurants I tried while in Chicago! Thanks and keep up the great posts!

  21. Wow. I haven’t been to Chi in 5 years. I call it the “New York of the Midwest”. And these pictures have sparked my interest in wanting to come back-which I will do, God willing.

I appreciate the backstory behind each and every picture!

  22. Your photography is incredible. I have a sister-in-law who is a photographer, four friends who are photographers, I come from a family of artists and currently live with my boyfriend’s family, also full of artists. I know what I’m looking for and even though I don’t have much money, I am still curious if you sell your work, in particular the first shot you put up in this post. You truly have a gift. I just moved away from Chicago last June and these pictures touch my soul and cause me to reflect back on how much I learned from the city’s unique culture. Thank you for following your gift.

  23. This is a great post to share, I am always interested in real peoples experiences of places rather then the brochures/sites. Fantastic pictures too.

  24. Chicago is so beautiful! I seriously can’t wait to go one day (and hopefully live there, ha ha!). Amazing pictures, loved them all.

  25. Hi.

I love Chicago. I’m from Madrid (Spain) and I’ve been there 3 times in July (one of them during 1 month to try to improve my English skills).

The skyscrapers are so close to the beach !!! The acustic of Millenium Park with a lot of families on its meadows!!! You can learn in its parks how to dance (for free) !!! The wonderful buildings!!! The river!!! ….. what a special city !!

  26. Great photos, I like the style.

But apart from your feet the city seems devoid of all life – where was everyone! Did you meet anyone apart from your uncle? 🙂

    Good luck with the work.

  27. That is a great post! You took some awesome pictures. I especially like the one where you’re standing on a see through floor looking down. That must have been a thrill.

If you would like to take a virtual tour of New York, please feel free to check out my blog at http://germch55.wordpress.com.

  28. And it looks like you had beautiful weather. I’m going to Chicago this weekend. Congrats on FP; your photos well deserve the showcase.

  29. Awesome photos! As someone who’s lived in Chicago my whole 30 years on this planet, I appreciate your appreciation for this city that I love so much. I even learned a few facts I had never heard before… like route 66 begining on Adams near the Art Institute, that was news to me!

  30. Very cool! Always wanted to go to Chicago myself for much the same reasons, the old mixed with the new and all that jazz.

  31. Let me just add that I am super jealous of your visit to Chi-town! I love everything about your photos. From your use of color, angles, lighting and compositions. Great work!

  32. Great pics!

Thanks for mentioning the 1978 law; I had not heard of it.

I live outside Chicago. I moved here in 1975, and my first few visits into the city predated the 1978 law. It was also before the Clean Air Act really had had time to take an effect. And before cities started learning that if they cleaned up their act they could draw tourist dollars. The city was ugly and dirty then. To my mind, it had nothing warranting any more ventures into the city. I spent time around Detroit and Boston, which in the 1960s were about as ugly as cities could get. Chicago was same old same old – old, ugly and grimy.

For over twenty years I didn’t go into the city. No reason to, and no wish to see ugly.

Then one daughter moved down into the city, on the North Side, about ten blocks north of Wrigley Field. Visits to her place woke me up to what Chicago had been doing since I relegated it to the bottom three on my “Places to Visit” list. Her neighborhood is a delight to walk in. I recommend the next time you visit Chicago you get a Taxi to the North Side and just get out and walk. You could do it to Belmont and Broadway instead and just walk in any direction. Just WANDER. You will get a great feel for the city. You could cheat and head the few blocks to Lincoln Park by the Lake, but you don’t have to. It is my ideal of what life in a city should be like.

When my younger son also moved to the city, it was to the Avondale neighborhoo, nicknamed “Where Eastern Europe meets Latin America”. He lives a block off Milwaukee and Pulaski, and it is like having his own mall within a three block radius. There are over 200 neighborhoods in Chicago, and many of them a delight – mostly real Joe Main Street places.

Come on back. It IS a great place to visit. Chicago made a lot of changes in those twenty years, and I approve of them. (All except handing over the parking meters to a private firm, and the citizenry has been bending over ever since. EIGHT minutes for a quarter!)

  33. I love that city, and I love this!

I wanted to stay at the Drake when I was there but was persuaded to stay somewhere more central. I don’t think I’ve taken more photos of a city, ever.

  34. Congratulations on being ‘Freshly Pressed!’ Chicago is my home town (live in San Francisco now). While I love San Francisco, I really love Chicago. I miss it. Thanks for sharing your images and thoughts. Your photographs show that you have a good eye. I look forward to seeing more.

I’m always curious to see if non-Chicagoans can really appreciate it. You obviously do. Keep up the goof work.

  35. Great shots! I particularly like the bridge shot. It seems like you took the photo during the afternoon, how did you manage to avoid the traffic?

The Sears Tower bottomless pic is cool too.

In general, I’m not a fan of big cities, but Chicago, with it’s broad avenues and down-home people doesn’t feel so much like a big city, strangely.

  36. GORGEOUS photography, bravo! I live in Chicago, have just about all of my life, and pass by these locations frequently. You’ve captured the grandeur of Chicago in your photos and have some information in this blog that I and most Chicagoans are not aware of. However, I can’t put my finger on your 5th picture. Could that be the cloistered, hallowed halls of Northwestern University? I’m not sure.

I really appreciate how you enjoyed your time here in Chicago and are sharing it so beautifully with others.

Apparently, Hollywood feels the same way about Chicago as you do and is here every year filming another movie. I wrote two blogs on how Hollywood filmed the movie “The Dark Knight” in 2007 and so many other movies in Chicago. I am not a professional photographer, but all of the photos in my second blog were taken by me here in Chicago:

  37. Hey Nick – I am not a photographer, just one of those folks who knows what he likes when he sees it. You seem to have a very good eye for the angle. I looked at several of your other photos and it appears you have an unique talent for getting the right energy out of whatever you are shooting. Truly enjoyed it.

    Life is a Revelation…Be encouraged!

  38. I’m from Chicago and could not love that city anymore! Truly amazing, the people, food.. everything! Awesome photos, and glad you like it!

  39. Oh, by the way, Hollywood was here last summer 2011 filming the new “Superman” movie. I tried out at the auditions last June, but I wasn’t selected. So I won’t be making my movie debut in this one. (Sigh !)

Hollywood started filming “Superman” in Chicago in August and September. I remember we had absolutely gorgeous weather those months. So the movie will be looking good when it comes to theatres in the summer of 2012!

  40. Thank you so much for the nice words about the city I consider home, even though I don’t actually live IN the city.

When you get back, I highly recomend the Chicago History Museum Pub Crawl Tours. My wife and I just took one this past weekend and had a blast. History and a cold beverage. How can you go wrong.

Here is my review of the tour if you are interested:

  41. Chicago is one of the cities on a short list of those I have yet to visit but really want to. SF is my most favorite so far, but from what I’ve been told by others it sounds like The Windy City could easily bump that one down to #2.

  42. Thank you for showing off some the best views! I live here and still can’t get enough looks to satisfy my eyes. I am biased, but I do think it is the best city to live in. Loved the river shot under the Wabash bridge with the tour boats in it! Did you take a boat ride? Seeing it from the water is a different perspective. Come again!

  43. I grew up in Chicago and have since moved to California. There are certain things about that city that I’ll never be able to replace, willingly or otherwise. Great photography here.

  44. Chicago is a great city…I was in the team from the UK who launched Boddingtons in the late 90’s.I ended up staying at the presidential towers just up the block from the Sears …one of the best 12 Weeks of my life..I used to drink at the hidden shamrock which was a fantastic bar…the yearly air and water show is amazing…I remember sitting on a boat on the lake watching a stealth fighter fly over…awesome!
Great pictures on your blog…thanks for triggering off a lot of great memories 🙂

  45. As a Chicagoan, seeing my city in different ways – different angles, different views – is really special. Gorgeous shots and really interesting info on Chi. You can see the building where I had my first big kid job in the skyline shot!

  46. I ahve got to say that i wish I was with you on that trip. I can tell that just by experiencing the beauty ofhiago that you had a wonderful time and imagine going back. i have always wanted to travel and see things for a little while but i don’t have a passport yet. nice pictures!

  47. These are very tasteful pictures of a great city. Glad that you love it! Hopefully you can come back during baseball season and take some pictures of the Cubs playing ball. I can’t tell you how badly they need some awesome pictures online.

  48. These photos are amazing! I was in Chicago for a semester in school, and I miss it terribly, and I think you captured the beauty of the city perfectly.

  49. It looks amazing. I’m from SIngapore and I’ve always thought of chicago as some sandy, hot area with cowboys in the States but now, my impression of chicago has completely changed. Hahaha thanks for showing me how microscopic my view of the world was.

  50. Well deserved FP! Your photos are wonderful and really capture some very unique angles of a lovely city! I particularly like the stone hallway (where is that?) and, like so many others, the fantastic bridge shot…

I’ve only been to Chicago once – my husband was included in a business trip with 6-7 other people and I was lucky enough to tag along. We were there for two days and didn’t get much ‘free’ time, but we loved it and plan to go back. Seeing your post reminds me just how much we enjoyed it – thanks for bringing that smile to my face! : )

  51. I love the photos, and the angles from which you took them. Also, I love the way you humanize The Drake. Makes the post a bit romantic, drawing me right in. 🙂 Chicago is indeed a beautiful place, rich, historic, and seriously capable of capturing the hearts of those who visit, as well as those who live there. I am still intrigued and in love with Chi-town.

    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  52. this is absolutely the best city in the whole wide world. i love it. the city has so much character! love your pictures too!

  53. Oh my goodness….what fabulous photos….hope to capture some great images like these one day. Thanks for sharing it in cyberspace.

  54. I’m a lifelong Chicagoan, and like you said there’s just so much to do and experience here; even having lived here so ling I still feel like I’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to experiencing Chicago. Your pictures capture the city perfectly, well done!

  55. I had two rounds in Chicago and Evanston –first as a student and then as a lawyer–totaling 14 years and I loved it. Thanks so much for giving me a bit of nostalgia. My favorite thing to do when people came to visit was to get tickets for one of the boat tours (by the Wrigley bldg) about an hour before sunset that went on the river first and then out on the lake at about the time to watch the sun go down behind the skyline and the lights come twinkling on. If you didn’t get to do that on your first visit I highly recommend it for your second assuming the time of year is right. Magic!

  57. Chicago is pretty fabulous. I’m fortunate to live within a few hours drive of Chicago. It’s funny, but the one thing I always think of when I think Chicago, is “The Blues Brothers”. (smiles)

  58. I’ve worked in downtown Chicago for most of the last 40 years. I’m now in the Tribune building, next door to the place where I started my first ‘Chicago’ job in 1972. It was impressive enough in 1972, but it’s amazing how much it’s grown and improved over the last ten years. After taking the train downtown, I take the water taxi to the Michigan Avenue bridge, half a block from the office. Nothing like starting your day with a boat ride!
